From Saddam in Iraq to Fiji is a long stretch. The invasion of Iraq, supported by exile Iraqi?s, and initially supported by Iraqi?s them selves came unstuck logistically. If George Bush and his immediate advisors had listened to the Generals and took a page out of history to the successes the USA have had in the past i.e. Germany, Japan, Korea, then this war was doable. Institutional memory would have had a much larger force, say 500,000 at least. If these had been a multi national force comprising many Muslim nations then there would have been an incredible force for moderation. Add a factor of total disarmament of the populace, effected by a buy back policy of all weapons and you would have had a populace that could have believed that the invaders were serious about law and order. If you tell a man to keep his AK47, you are telling him that he needs to take care of law and order himself. In this case, the order soon became, get the invader out, especially when confronted by a bunch off ignorant, red neck, star wars looking clad soldiers, mostly gathered up from the shopping malls of America. Transpose this against the WW2 conscripted soldier, more mature and representative of a full spectrum of different education and class. The States and West lost an opportunity, simply because the most powerful military force on the planet is ?led by a small clique of want to be generals?. It?s frighteningly enlightening to realize how precarious an army so powerful is led. You have a powerful joint chief of staff and ultimately a ?twit? is the boss. Is it any wonder Americans are constitutionally allowed to bear arms. Their Constitution is so institutionally insecure they must put its protection in the hands of individual citizens of the State. |
